What Questions Should You Ask When Getting Fitted?

A common question for those who haven't been fitted before, though the unique thing about fitting is that, as long as you've got a good fitter, they should be the ones asking you the questions.

You might be thinking, but I don't know what I'm going to get fit for. Shouldn't I have some idea first? Genuinely, not really, that's the fitter's job. But turning up with a little thought behind you makes the whole session better for both of you.

What to think about before you go

Have a think about your price range and which brands you already like, and bring your current clubs along so the fitter can see exactly what you're playing now. All of this helps them guide you toward something you'll genuinely be happy with, because you're about to spend real money on clubs you want to keep for years, not swap out again in six months.

"A fit should establish what you're looking for from the outset. That's the unique thing about fitting, it's not a test you need to revise for."

The questions a good fitter should ask you

Have you been fit before? What's your current handicap? How often, and where, do you play? These are the kind of questions a fitter should be asking to build a proper picture of what you actually need. If none of this comes up early on, that's worth noticing.

A genuinely good fitter will also ask about your goals, what you want your new clubs to do that your current ones don't, and about any injuries or physical limitations that might shape what suits you. That last part gets overlooked more often than you'd think.

One more thing worth asking

It's worth checking whether your fitter is brand agnostic. One tied to, or with exclusives on, a particular brand can only ever recommend what's already sitting on their own shelf, and that might not be what you actually need or want. A fitter with a genuinely wide range can compare properly across manufacturers rather than steering you toward whatever they happen to stock. Always worth checking before you go in.

If you're still not sure where to start

Take a quick test to get some idea of what might suit you, print it off, and bring it with you. What we suggest might not turn out to be exactly what you're fitted into, and that's fine, you won't know for certain until you're actually fitted. But it gives you and the fitter a real starting point, rather than walking in with nothing at all.

Quick Summary

A good fitter should be asking you the questions, about your handicap, how often you play, and what you want your clubs to actually do. Your job beforehand is simpler, think about your budget, bring your current clubs, and be honest about your goals. It's also worth asking how many brands the fitter carries.
